Sussex County's districts student body comprised mostly of Black students in 2023-24 school year

Black students comprised the largest ethnic group in Sussex County districts during the 2023-24 school year, according to reports from the Virginia Department of Education.

Of the 994 students attending Sussex County district schools, 68.6% were Black. White made up the second largest ethnic group, comprising 20.3% of the student population.

In the previous school year, Black students were also the most common group in Sussex County districts, representing 67.7% of the student body.

In the 2023-24 school year, the total number of students enrolled in the county dropped 0.4% compared to the previous year.

The main offices of all districts mentioned in the story are located in cities associated with Sussex County.

As of November 2023, according to Public School Review, in the 2023-24 school year, Virginia public schools saw an average student-to-teacher ratio of approximately 1:14, which is better than the national average of 1:15 in public schools.
