994 students enrolled in Sussex County schools in 2023-24 school year

There were 994 students enrolled in Sussex County schools in the 2023-24 school year, 0.4% less than the previous year, according to the Virginia Department of Education.

In terms of gender distribution, the student body in Sussex County comprised 52.7% boys, with girls representing the remaining 47.3%.

Data also showed that Black or African American students made up 68.6% of the student body, the largest percentage in Sussex County schools, followed by white students with 20.3%, 6.4% Hispanic students and 0.9% Asian students.

Sussex Central Elementary School had the highest enrollment among Sussex County's three schools in the 2023-24 school year, welcoming 448 students.

According to Public School Review, Virginia public schools have an average student-to-teacher ratio of 14:1, slightly better than the national average of 15:1. Minority students, primarily Hispanic and Black, make up 54% of the enrollment, while white students constitute 46%.
