Surry County leaders are thrilled to see significant progress with the development of the county’s local market project. “This game changing project has been a long-time coming for our residents”, according to David Harrison, Deputy County Administrator. The county’s investment into the local market project has been made through purchasing of refrigeration in the amount of $300,000 which was executed by the Surry County Economic Development Authority.
The refrigeration is scheduled to arrive at the local market no later than November 2022. Surry County’s Economic Development Office and EDA has prioritized this local food access initiative and this project is the result of their efforts. Thanks are in order to the Obici Healthcare Foundation and The Genan Foundation for their contributions to this important endeavor.
The project contractors have obtained a demolition permit for the interior of the local market. The proposed final interior layout drawing has been submitted to UNFI for review and approval. Once the approval for the layout and design is agreed upon, the county’s building official will work with the contractors to obtain the building permit. Once a building permit has been issued, construction of the interior buildout will commence.
“Through this innovative partnership, the County will be one step closer to addressing the local fresh food access and food system resilience.” stated Surry County administrator, Melissa Rollins.
The Surry Marketplace Local Market is scheduled to open no later than Spring of 2023.
