• A new report finds that the market for sinus dilation devices is expected to grow by almost 3 billion dollars between 2021 and 2030.
• Those figures represent a compound annual growth rate of 10.8% from 2022 to 2030.
• Sinus dilation devices are used in balloon sinuplasty, which is quick and comfortable when compared to older sinus surgeries.
The market for sinus dilation devices -- which are used to treat chronic sinusitis through balloon sinuplasty -- is expected to grow from $1.9 billion in 2021 to $4.79 billion by 2030, according to a report by Globe Newswire.
"How we address sinuses surgically has changed over the last two decades," Capitol Breathe Free Sinus & Allergy Centers' Dr. Manish Khanna told the Gateway Reporter. "Initially in the '80s, the more you remove, the better. What we were finding were patients where you're actually making them worse because those tissues are there for a reason. Our nasal anatomy, our nasal passages have the function of warming and moisturizing. It's almost a barrier, a kind of filter for all the evil that we breathe that's coming into our bodies. So it's really become more of a directed, minimally invasive procedure, maintaining tissues. Now, with the advent of balloon sinuplasty, you are making the openings bigger without doing any aggressive cutting. Recovery times are much, much improved. Patients are getting back to normal activities and their normal lives quickly, and this balloon technology is getting better and better. It's getting less invasive and more directed, more accurate and easier for us as the surgeons."
Chronic sinusitis is extremely common, and doctors are increasingly relying on balloon sinuplasty to treat it due to its minimally invasive and highly effective nature. Procedures that utilize a balloon to dilate the sinuses are considered safe and effective, presenting a good treatment option for patients who have struggled to manage their sinusitis with medication alone. Globe Newswire also predicted that medical companies such as Stryker will continue to improve their sinus dilation devices, which will ultimately lead to an increased demand for them.
According to Mayo Clinic, chronic sinusitis is commonly found in both adults and children, and it occurs when the sinus lining is inflamed for three months or longer. This inflammation can lead to symptoms such as congestion, discharge, postnatal drainage, facial pain, facial pressure, headaches, earaches, sore throat and fatigue. Asthma and allergy sufferers are also at a higher risk of developing chronic sinusitis, and those who have been experiencing sinusitis symptoms for more than 10 days are encouraged to see a doctor.
According to the Eisemann Plastic Surgery Center, a typical balloon sinuplasty procedure lasts 10 to 15 minutes, with patients recovering within one to two days. Most patients will be able to resume their normal daily activities during that time period, although they may also experience some swelling for up to a week. During the procedure, an ear, nose and throat (ENT) physician will insert a small balloon into the patient's sinus and inflate it until the sinus reaches the optimal size. This allows blockages to drain from the sinus passages, which are then flushed with a saline solution to remove any lingering bacteria or mucus.
