Meet Dr. McIntyre: Helping Patients Get Better Sleep

Meet Dr. McIntyre: Helping Patients Get Better Sleep

Please join us in welcoming Nicole McIntyre, DO, to Bon Secours Pulmonary Specialists where she specializes in sleep medicine!

Dr. McIntyre’s journey to becoming a physician has been a unique one.

“I started out as a naval flight surgeon,” she shares. “I actually deployed on the USS Enterprise and flew in all kinds of aircraft. After my tour, I went back to residency and completed a five-year otolaryngology residency.”

When asked what the most rewarding aspect of her specialty is, Dr. McIntyre says that she loves helping people get better sleep.

“If you can’t sleep well, you can’t do anything well! The entire quality of your life is affected by any number of sleep disorders.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a third of U.S. adults reported that they typically get less than the recommended amount of sleep each night. Adults should get at least seven hours of sleep per night.

Not getting enough sleep is linked with many chronic diseases and conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, obesity and depression. Not getting enough sleep can also lead to car crashes and mistakes at work, which cause a lot of injury and disability each year. And finally, sleep disorders can increase a person’s risk of health problems.

Because of her ENT background, Dr. McIntyre brings a special skill set to her patients.

“I look at the airway a little differently because of my background. I approach issues with CPAP intolerance from a different perspective. I also intend to incorporate an in-office flexible fiberoptic exam of patients’ upper airways, as well as start a hypoglossal nerve implant program for our sleep apnea patients that are candidates for this alternative therapy.”

Dr. McIntyre is very excited to be part of our ministry’s team!

“I am committed to helping our patients get better sleep and to have better health in general,” she adds.

Outside of work, Dr. McIntyre enjoys spending time with family, travelling and gourmet cooking.
