VSU Football to End Losing Streak on the Road at Elizabeth City State

The Virginia State Trojans are looking to get back on track after dropping their last two games as they travel to Elizabeth City, North Carolina to take on the Elizabeth City State University Vikings. The Divisional matchup is set for Saturday, October 22 at 1:00 p.m.

Self-Scouting

The Trojans currently average 30 points per game while giving up only 23 per game to opponents. The Trojans also average 411.1 yards per game while they are first in the CIAA and the nation in interceptions with 13 along with 19 sacks on the season.

 

 

VSU Run Game

The running game for the Trojans ranks second in the CIAA in rushing yards with 1,382 averaging 197.4 yards per game. They are second in the conference in rushing touchdowns with 18. Senior standout Darius Hagans leads the rushing attack as he has a team-high 687 yards which ranks him second in the conference. He has the longest running play of the season in the CIAA with an 86-yard touchdown run against Bluefield State University in which also was a career long for him.  He currently stands 9th in the country in rushing yards also. Upton Bailey is second on the team with 304 rushing yards and first on the team in yards per carry with 5.6. He currently ranks eighth in CIAA in rushing yards. Kimo Clarke is third on the team in rushing with 174 rushing yards on 36 carries. He also is ties for first on the team in rushing touchdowns with five. Quarterback Jordan Davis adds five rushing touchdowns of his own this season. With Hagans leading the charge in the running back room, the trio of running backs have had a stellar season so far and have made the Trojans rushing attacks one to be respected by all the teams in the conference as all three have more than three rushing touchdowns.

 

 

VSU Passing Game

The passing attack for the Trojans ranks third in the CIAA with 1,496 passing yards and 12 passing touchdowns. The team averages 213.7 passing yards per game and has a 54.3 completion percentage. Jordan Davis is the leader of the passing attack as he has a team leading 1,139 passing yards and eight passing touchdowns and only two interceptions. He ranks third in the conference in passing yards and fourth in the conference in passing touchdown with 8. Prior to earning his first career start against LC, Jordan Davis came in a reliever role in the start of this season completing 75% of his passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. After efficient play in the first two games, he earned his first official start against Livingstone and went 18-30 passing for 251 yards with a touchdown through the air and a pair on the ground. Career-high's a week ago earned him CIAA Food Lion's Quarterback of the Week after throwing for a career-high 301 yards while completing a career-high 24-of-37 (65%) of his passes with a pair of touchdowns through the air. Tylique Ray is now seventh in the conference in receiving yards with 378 on just 17 receptions. He has scored two touchdowns this season with one of them being a 76-yard reception. Against Chowan, Ray accounted for 6 catches for 66 yards.

VSU Defense

The VSU defense gives up 24 points per contest. They now lead the conference and the nation with 13 interceptions. Kymon Pope currently ranks first on the team in total tackles with 49 along with a forced fumble, two interceptions and three pass breakups. His 49 total tackles ranks him seventh in the conference. Pope has accounted for 34 solo tackles which ranks him fourth in the conference. He earned six tackles (four solo) and a tackle for loss. Zion Johnson is now second on the team in total tackles with 47 along with a pair of forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. His 47 total tackles ranks him 11th in the conference. He earned a six tackles (four solo) in the in the loss to Chowan. Willie Drew now leads the conference and is second in the nation in interceptions with five and has also accounted for five pass breakups. He also accounts for 25 tackles including 18 solo stops this season to go along with his terrific pass coverage statistics. Miqueal Pillow - Smiley leads the defensive line with 5.5 tackles-for-loss to go along with four sacks.
