Lisa Finds Purpose in Her Incredible Profession

90

“When you watch colleagues and medical practitioners in all disciplines around you who continue to unselfishly care for others amidst professional burnout, overwhelming home responsibilities and a grueling pandemic, it is easy to be proud and grateful for deciding to become part of this incredible profession,” Lisa Miller, FNP-BC at the Bon Secours – Express Care, shares.

Nursing runs in Lisa’s family. Her mother was a nurse who also worked for our ministry.

“My mom inspired me to become a nurse. It was evident that she loved her work, and I wanted to do something in my life that would bring me that same joy,” Lisa explains. “After 10 years of practicing as a nurse, I returned to school and became a nurse practitioner.”

After becoming a nurse practitioner, Lisa continued through school, eventually earning her Ph.D. Learning will never stop for Lisa because for her, learning and new skills go hand in hand.

“I want to ensure that I have the knowledge needed to effectively diagnose and design the best evidence-based treatment plans possible for my patients,” Lisa says. “Additionally, my post-graduate degree has allowed me to expand my practice with opportunities to teach nurse practitioner students, obtain grants to expand rural health into impoverished areas of South Carolina and participate in medical mission trips to remote countries.”

When asked why she loves being a nurse practitioner, Lisa shares, “I love providing patients with the care they need. This care extends to really listening and understanding their needs beyond physical symptoms. Providing complete care is rewarding, and being a nurse practitioner allows you to have many of these experiences.”

Looking toward the future, Lisa is excited to become more integrated into our ministry’s family.

“Bon Secours is very much a family of practitioners. I love knowing that I will have the support I need to provide excellent, compassionate care.”

Outside of work Lisa enjoys spending time with family – she has four teenagers! She also loves to travel.
