The Prince George County Board of Supervisors held its regular meeting on October 14, where members approved a significant change to the county’s real estate assessment schedule. The Board unanimously voted to amend the County Code to shift from annual to biennial real estate assessments, beginning January 1, 2027. As a result, the reassessment previously scheduled for January 1, 2026 will be skipped.
During the public hearing, four citizens expressed support for the move to biennial assessments. Board members discussed ongoing concerns from some property owners regarding their current assessments. The Interim Real Estate Assessor addressed these concerns, stating, “Factual corrections can still be made on any assessment at any time.” Following this assurance, the Board approved the ordinance amendment.
With this change, county staff will start the reassessment process in spring 2026. The next reassessment will be completed by January 1, 2027, and the updated property values will be reflected in the December 5, 2027 and June 5, 2028 real property tax bills.
In other business, the Board approved a $25,736.07 appropriation of Federal and State Asset Forfeiture Funds. Members also received a roads maintenance report from the Virginia Department of Transportation and reviewed the county’s Disaster Recovery Plan, agreeing by consensus to proceed with Cooperative Purchasing Agreements.
The Board heard an update on the Zoning & Subdivision Ordinances Modernization/Update Project and discussed the FY2027 Budget and Capital Improvement Plan calendar, including enhancements in the budget process. They unanimously approved a Memorandum of Understanding with Surry County for emergency mutual aid communications.
By a 3-1 vote (with Mr. Pugh opposed and Mrs. Waymack absent), the Board awarded contracts for roof replacement and related work at the Recreation Department, not to exceed $1,059,730 with J. King DeShazo and $61,982 with Cii, Inc. for replacing three rooftop heat pump and air conditioning units. The same voting margin approved the Prince George Parks and Recreation Activities Rules, with the understanding that revisions will be considered at the October 28 meeting.
The Board unanimously authorized applying for the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services Operation Ceasefire Grant. Another 3-1 vote approved a contract with Managing Results, LLC for Year 3 of department and agency strategic plans.
Chairman Brown was unanimously appointed as the county’s representative—and Mr. Stoke as alternate—to cast votes at the Virginia Association of Counties (VACO) Annual Business Meeting. Mr. Eric Crawford and Mr. CeJae Vtipilson were unanimously appointed to the Economic Development Authority. The Board also voted unanimously to recommend Ms. Shanna Story for reappointment to the Board of Appeals.
