In a rural community, the phrase “it takes a village” is an understatement.
The village of friends, family and neighbors also include your pharmacy team, and all are needed to care for each other. Specifically at Bon Secours Rappahannock General Hospital, Laura Hand, PharmD, displays her care for her village every day.
Laura has been recognized by her colleagues for taking on initiatives to improve processes and patient care. She is interested in sterile compounding and completed American Society of Health-System Pharmacists certifications to become our USP 800 designee. USP 800 provides standards for safe handling of hazardous drugs to minimize the risk of exposure to health care personnel, patients and the environment.
Laura knows the importance of medication reconciliation and always finds a way to clarify medications by meeting with our patients, many of whom are her neighbors and friends. Her dedication even reaches the community at large by donating her hair to Locks of Love, volunteering at her children’s school and participating in community events.
Laura has been recognized by her team for her dedication, motivation and care.
Additionally, she was named clinical associate of the month for Rappahannock General Hospital, which happens to be the hospital where she was born! Laura is a mother of three and wife of Steve Hand, PharmD, (pictured above with Laura) who also joined our pharmacy team.
Steve has been employed as a retail pharmacist in our community for 11 years.
Like Laura, Steve’s presence in the hospital is a comfort to many patients who have known and trusted him for years. He has also been recognized for providing good care.
Rappahannock General is thankful to have this dynamic duo on our team. As we celebrate National Pharmacy Week, we express gratitude for our pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and other pharmacy colleagues who fill an important role in our larger care team.
