Glen Sturtevant, a Virginia state senator, used his social media platform on October 9, 2025, to make a series of statements about the Virginia gubernatorial race and the positions of candidate Abigail Spanberger.
In a post on October 9, Sturtevant stated, “Spanberger will make Virginia a sanctuary state if elected. Her record proves it: she voted against sanctuary bans and funding for border security. #VAGovDebate #vapol”. In another message the same evening, he wrote, “Spanberger is soft on crime and silent on victims. The contrast could not be more clear: @WinWithWinsome will keep you safe. #VAGovDebate #vapol”.
Sturtevant also addressed education policy in Virginia, posting, “The quality of your child’s education should not be determined by your zip code. By electing @WinWithWinsome, we will end that. #VAGovDebate #vapol”.
Sturtevant’s comments come as the gubernatorial race in Virginia intensifies, with public debate focusing on issues such as immigration policy, public safety, and education. Abigail Spanberger, currently serving as a U.S. Representative for Virginia’s 7th Congressional District, has faced criticism from political opponents over her voting record on immigration and law enforcement issues.
The debate over “sanctuary” policies has been a recurring topic in Virginia politics, with some lawmakers seeking to restrict localities from limiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities. Education reform has also been a prominent issue, particularly regarding access to quality schooling across different regions of the state.
Sturtevant’s endorsement of Winsome Sears, the current Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, highlights the divisions within the gubernatorial race as candidates position themselves on key policy areas.
