On January 28, 2026, at around 10:00 a.m., Prince George County Fire and EMS responded to a medical emergency on Manchester Drive. Upon arrival, crews encountered severe icy conditions both on the roadway and at the residence.
During their response, the patient was safely moved into Medic 5. However, one Fire and EMS member slipped and fell due to the ice. As crews prepared to leave, Medic 5 slid into a ditch. Engine 8 attempted to assist but also ended up in a nearby ditch.
No damage was reported to either vehicle, and no further injuries occurred. Additional resources—including Battalion Chief 3, Logistics 1 and 2, Brush 5, and units from the Prince George Garage—were called to help recover the vehicles. Both were safely retrieved using winches and rock salt.
Medic 5 resumed transport of the patient at about 11:48 a.m. without further problems. The injured Fire and EMS member sustained minor injuries and is expected to fully recover.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) was notified and will have crews treat the affected area.
Prince George County Fire and EMS advised residents to be cautious when traveling during freezing temperatures because even treated roads can become dangerous quickly. The department thanked all responding crews for their efforts under challenging conditions.
