Dinwiddie County Public Schools (DCPS) has announced that September is designated as Attendance Awareness Month, with a focus on the theme “Attend to Win!” This initiative aims to highlight the significance of regular student attendance.

According to DCPS, while some absences are unavoidable due to illness or unforeseen circumstances, extended absences can lead to missed learning opportunities, potentially impacting students’ academic growth and future success. The district encourages families to collaborate with schools to ensure daily attendance and support educational goals. Good attendance is deemed essential for overall achievement and skill development.

Research cited by DCPS indicates that consistent attendance significantly affects student outcomes, including reading proficiency by third grade, middle school success, and graduation rates. Chronic absenteeism in sixth grade serves as an early warning sign for potential dropouts, while ninth-grade attendance strongly predicts eventual graduation. Missing even two days per month can contribute to chronic absenteeism, emphasizing the importance of daily attendance.

DCPS offers practical strategies for families to promote regular attendance. These include establishing consistent bedtimes and morning routines, preparing clothing and materials in advance, scheduling appointments outside school hours, communicating with teachers and support staff to alleviate anxiety about attending school, arranging backup transportation plans, and recognizing students’ efforts to attend daily. The district invites families to share ideas and collaborate for a productive year with strong attendance.

Dinwiddie County Public Schools serves students in Dinwiddie County with a staff committed to providing instruction and support. The district values community involvement and multi-generational connections among students and staff. Its core values—excellence, equity, and integrity—guide academic programs and expectations for behavior. The district’s logo and tagline “Deep Roots, Great Heights” reflect its history, community support, and aspirations for achievement under the leadership of Superintendent Dr. Kari Weston.
