Chesterfield County Public Schools (CCPS) has announced that Sue Anderson, a science teacher at Carver College and Career Academy, has been honored with a statewide award from the Virginia Association of Science Teachers (VAST) for her excellence in science education.
According to CCPS, VAST annually presents RISE Awards to recognize exceptional science educators across Virginia. Anderson received this accolade for her work with at-risk students. She has been part of Chesterfield County Public Schools since 1999 and has taught at Carver College and Career Academy since 2000. Additionally, she serves as the science department lead, supporting both students and fellow educators in delivering science instruction.
“What distinguishes Sue most is her unwavering commitment to cultivating meaningful relationships with her students,” said one of Anderson’s nominators. “She recognizes that academic success is built upon trust and mutual respect, especially for students facing personal or school-based challenges.” The nominator further said that Anderson’s students would describe her as both a mentor and advocate; someone who believes in them even when they struggle to believe in themselves. “Sue is a rare educator whose impact resonates through the lives of students, colleagues, and the Carver community. Her blend of expertise, compassion, and leadership make her not only an outstanding teacher but a transformative science leader.”
VAST was established in 1952 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting high-quality science education. Serving as Virginia’s chapter of the National Science Teaching Association, VAST brings together science educators from across the state to inspire students, offer professional development, foster partnerships, and advocate for excellence in science teaching at local, state, and national levels.
Chesterfield County Public Schools serves over 64,000 students across 67 schools with a $1 billion budget. The district reports a 91% on-time graduation rate with approximately 4,700 graduates annually and millions in scholarship awards. It includes seven National Blue Ribbon Schools and eight National ESEA Distinguished Schools among others. Governed by a five-member School Board, CCPS follows the strategic plan Imagine Beyond Tomorrow to promote lifelong learning, personal growth, and college- and career-ready graduates.
