Chesterfield County Public Schools (CCPS) announced a topping-off ceremony on August 11, celebrating the placement of the final structural beam for the $52 million west area elementary school, scheduled to open in 2026.

According to CCPS, this event marked a significant milestone in the construction of its 41st elementary school. During the ceremony, school and county leaders signed and hoisted the final structural beam. The beam was adorned with an evergreen tree symbolizing good luck, safe completion, and growth; a broom representing a “clean sweep” with no construction-related injuries; and an American flag honoring the hard work and patriotism of the construction crew.

Scheduled to open in August 2026, the new west area elementary school in the Matoaca District is part of a community facilities bond plan approved by Chesterfield County voters in 2022. The $52 million budget is funded through Virginia Public School Authority bonds. According to CCPS, the two-story building is designed using Chesterfield’s elementary school prototype and will accommodate up to 1,000 students from kindergarten through fifth grade. The exterior colors were selected by the community.

“This moment is symbolic. The final steel beam represents not just the completion of a building’s framework,” said School Board Vice Chair Lisa Hudgins. “It’s a visible reminder that we are building something lasting, something that will shape the lives of students for decades. This school will offer modern, adaptable spaces that support collaboration, creativity and curiosity. It will reflect the energy and enthusiasm of the students who will walk its halls and the dedication of the educators who will lead them.”

CCPS serves over 64,000 students across 67 schools with a $1 billion budget and full accreditation. It reports a 91% on-time graduation rate with roughly 4,700 graduates annually and millions in scholarship awards. The district includes seven National Blue Ribbon Schools, eight National ESEA Distinguished Schools, multiple Middle Schools to Watch, and 17 Virginia Index of Performance awardees. Each year, buses travel nine million miles, over nine million meals are served, and students use more than 64,000 devices. Governed by a five-member School Board, CCPS follows the strategic plan Imagine Beyond Tomorrow to promote lifelong learning, personal growth, and college- and career-ready graduates.
